I say, much art is judged according to a standard of naturalness. In acting, we want to see people emoting and doing unselfconsciously, which is the hardest thing in the world when a camera is jammed in your face. In writing, we want honesty.

And the most efficient way to achieve naturalness is forgetting the audience. (But what is the most efficient way to forget the audience? That's a tougher question...)
