Obscuring Reality

Philip K. Dick says:
So-called 'reality' is a mass delusion that we've all been required to believe for reasons totally obscure.
I say:
I grew up surrounded by people who were comforted by, inspired to the beat of, and relentlessly yearned for universalising world-views (or 'metanarratives' a la Lyotard). I'm much more interested in analysing why people feel the need to adhere to 'reality', which fails to capture my imagination.
Are PKD's reasons really 'obscure', or just not a popular subject of analysis?
