Opportunities for Illumination Lie, Waiting to Be Wakened, By You
February 20th 2009 03:21
Franz Kafka says:
You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait. Do not even wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
Epiphanie says:
This is a very clever, sophisticated text - why doesn't Kafka make it even better by turning his statements into questions, like - why don't you simply wait?

I'm very happy to hear that I was able to get you thinking about how prose could be improved by transforming statements into questions - this is a long-time interest of mine, because I think a question is a more interesting lingual formation than a statement. I've probably consciously favoured questions in my writing since early uni or late high school... sometime around 2001 or so.
I shall try it:
Why do you need to leave your room? Why not sit at your table and listen? Why even listen, when you can simply wait? Why not leave behind the waiting, imagine being quiet, still and solitary instead? Why not let the world freely offer itself to you, discarding all masks, powerless at your intent interest? Why not let it roll at your feet in ecstacy?
