Democracy Vs. Art?

Many of the contradictions in Postmodern art come from the fact that we're trying to be artists in a democratic society. This is because in a democracy, the ideal is compromise. In art, it isn't.
I say:
I think that democracy only exists because people won't compromise on the notion of freedom (no matter hoe badly it's being subverted in the world thanks to Bush), and I think that art is much more likely to flourish and create diverse cultures in a democractic society than in any other.
